Myanmar Earthquake.

One Year Later. The Crisis Remains.

One year later since the earthquake that devastated central Myanmar, 9.3 million people still urgently need health care.

The people of Myanmar are still dealing with the devastating impact.

On 28 March 2025, a devastating earthquake struck central Myanmar, compounding years of armed conflict and displacement that had already pushed the country's health system to its limits.

One year on 9.3 million people still urgently need health care and more than 3.6 million people remain internally displaced, disease outbreaks are rising, and children are growing up without vaccinations.

Vulnerable groups, especially women, children, older persons, individuals with disabilities and those experiencing mental health challenges, face significant barriers to accessing even the most basic healthcare. Without immediate and sustained support, their health and well-being remain at critical risk.

Due to chronic underfunding, WHO has already been forced to withdraw from 13 townships, leaving 150,000 people without essential health services.

Your support helps WHO stay, respond, and reach the people no one else can.

Myanmar is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, ranked third globally for climate impact. When the earthquake struck in March 2025, WHO was able to deliver 63 tonnes of emergency medicines within 48 hours because supplies were already pre-positioned.

Your gift helps WHO deliver essential health services sustained for 200,000 people through local partners and community health workers.

In Mandalay's relief camps, health workers describe patients who are anxious, grieving, and afraid of another earthquake. Many have lost family members. The mental toll of conflict, displacement, and disaster compounds silently and without support. It deepens over time.

Your gift funds mental health and psychosocial support for up to 100,000 earthquake-affected people, and the training of frontline health workers to provide psychological first aid to those who need it most.

1.5 million children under five have missed basic vaccinations since 2018. A nationwide cholera outbreak ran from mid-2024 into 2025. Malaria has resurged. The conditions for a major preventable outbreak are already in place.

Your gift funds immunisation programmes in hard-to-reach and conflict-affected areas, and strengthens the laboratory and surveillance systems needed to detect outbreaks early before they become crises.

WHO's Response

In 2026, WHO is scaling up its leadership and coordination role in Myanmar, with a focus on emergency preparedness, workforce training, community engagement, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), infection prevention and control (IPC).

These efforts aim to strengthen the resilience of the health system and support the most vulnerable populations facing acute needs.

Simply put, your gift today helps WHO deliver emergency supplies, protect children from preventable disease, and provide mental health care to communities still recovering from the earthquake.

Despite access constraints and funding limitations, WHO remains the only organization able to combine health cluster leadership, technical expertise and operational partnerships to sustain essential health services in high-risk townships
